Around December, 14th a hummingbird was reported coming to a feeder in Honaker,
Va. Roger Mayhorn initially contacted the home owner about the hummingbird
because he knew the family. Roger was unable to get over to see the
hummingbird, but David Raines and Daryl Owens and I made a trip on December
17th to attempt to see and possibly photograph the hummingbird. We were able to
get photos of the bird at the feeder and around the yard. Our initial thought
was either a Ruby-throated or a Black-chinned. We agreed to contact a
hummingbird bander to get a positive ID on the bird. The bander’s initial
impression based on "photographs only" was a female ruby-throated, he attempted
to get a permit in VA to band the bird but the hummer disappeared 4 days ago as
reported today by the homeowner before the permit was obtained. The hummingbird
was not banded and a positive ID on it was not made, it is doubtful that it
will return, but either species would have been a good find. If it does happen
to return, hopefully another attempt can be made to capture and band the bird.
Photographs can be found here http://www.msandersphotography.com/hummer

public out of concern for the homeowner.
