Yesterday five members of the Russell County Bird Club went to Hidden Valley Lake for a field trip. Participants were Dave Worley (trip leader), Tom Hunter, Bessie Salyers, Jane Thornhill, and Jerry Thornhill. The weather was beautiful and the birds were cooperative. Several Scarlet Tanagers, both males and females, gave great looks. Several warbler species including Black-throated Blue and Green, American Redstart, and Canada Warbler were found. Three species of vireos (Blue-headed, Yellow-throated, and Red-eyed) made appearances. We spotted both Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks. We also found Downy and Pileated Woodpeckers, Gray Catbird, Common Raven, Tree and Barn Swallows, Purple Martin, and several other common species for the area. Great company and good birds made for a very enjoyable trip. Jerry Thornhill
