Hey Roger, you never know what you'll find until you get ou there! Who would have thought a Great Egret in that setting? Great find on the Vesper Sparrows. I'll be on the look-out for some here. Marie Miller checked the first 10 yesterday at Keen Mt Park and found 4 complete nests but no eggs yet. These last 10 boxes are on the property of Kenneth Horn. While I was checking a box he came out of his house and told me that there was a large white bird down in the hollow that had been there all day. We drove down there and found a Great Egret perched high in a tree. Threre was no water around, so my assumption is that the bird was migrating and dropped down to rest. While checking the rest of the nest boxes I flushed 5 birds from a field. As they flew up I saw they had white outer tail feathers. They landed in a nearby tree and I got good looks at them. They were all Vesper Sparrows. Only one of the 10 bluebird nest boxes had a nest, and it was only partial. Yesterday I checked the bluebird trail here on Compton Mountain with its 25 nest boxes and found 4 with complete nests but no eggs yet. With the warm weather the next few days the birds should start laying.
