Hi All, Bob Sweaney, who lives in KY sent this e-mail to me yesterday. Maybe some of you would have some ideas on the ID of the bird he saw. According to the Gold Book of Virginia the earliest Veery reported in Southwest VA is April 15th. Being so close to us in KY I would think the dates for returning Veerys there would be very close to that. If the bird was not a Hermit Thrush, what might it have been? Roger, This morning I did some birding near the dam at Fishtrap Lake. Identified several birds but one that leaves me doubtful was my "veery". I know little about how early they may migrate so he's the best description that I can give. It was moving very quietly on or near the ground in heavy undergrowth near a stream. I was primarily was able to look down on the bird. The top of the head and back were uniformly a warm brown-red. There were very faint markings on the sides of the breast---while the center of the breast was speckled. It had what I would call a faint eye ring. I'm sure it was a thrush but which one---hope you can help.
