Subject: siskin rescue

All,
As I was walking my dogs this morning, I caught sight of a beautiful male
kestrel perched in a tree. I ran back inside to grab my binos for a better
look at the kestrel and on my way back out, I heard the flutter of wings
close by. I looked around and saw a pine siskin perched on some rocks by the fishpond. I walked closer and the bird did not move. Thinking that the bird
must be sick or injured, I decided to move it to a more restful location.
When I bent down to scoop it up, I was surprised to find I could not pick it up. When I looked closer, I discovered that the bird's feet and some of its breast/belly feathers were frozen to the rock! I rushed back inside, grabbed a dishcloth, soaked it in warm water and returned to the siskin. As soon as
the warm water touched those tiny feet, they came loose. I then picked the
bird up, moved it to a shrub near the feeders. It sat very still for a long
time. Exhausted from the struggle to get free from the rock, it tucked its
head under a wing and dozed off in the sunlight. After a few minutes of rest
and warming, it flew to the thistle feeder and began to eat voraciously. I
assume that the bird came to drink from the pond, stood on some debris in
the pond and got too wet. When it hopped to the rock, it became frozen in
place. I never did get a good look at the kestrel, it had flown by the time
I got back to the field!
