Hi All, It looks like the Goldfinches have started nesting. For those of you who don't know, Goldfinches are late nesters. They usually nest after the blooming of the thistle plant. They use its soft down to line their nests. They can be found nesting up into September. A few years ago Bob Riggs showed me a nest in a Maple tree in September. The nest was next to the road just below the Mendota fire tower very near the Russell County - Washington County line here in VA. For the next couple of months you should see more male Goldfinches at your feeders than you do females. The females will be on the nest. It was almost at the end of a large branch in an oak about 12 to 15 feet above the ground and over the road. The tree limb stretched out over Ebenezer Church Rd from Legacy Farm to Gracehill Farm. It was near a pond & the field of thistle and other wildflowers where the Loggerhead Shrikes use to nest. A female was sitting in it but I'm not sure whether she was already sitting on eggs or finishing building the next. While watching the nest, the Willow Flycatcher called a couple of times from the willows that border the stream (Dog Branch). Good birding, Joe Coleman near Bluemont, Loudoun Co -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ va-bird mailing list http://mailman.listserve.com/listmanager/listinfo/va-bird Va-bird is a service of the Virginia Society of Ornithology. http://www.virginiabirds.net/
