Yesterday, 8 members and guests of the Buchanan County Bird Club arrived early at the Mayhorn home on Compton Mt for a warm breakfast prepared by Lynda before birding 3 areas of the county looking for recently arrived migrants from their southern wintering grounds. We birded our property (Mayhorns) of Compton Mt, the head of Slate Creek and Enoch's Branch Park. We found 63 species including 15 warbler species, 2 hawk species - Sharp-shinned and Red-shouldered, 5 woodpecker species, 4 vireo species - White-eyed, Yellow-throated, Blue-headed and Red-eyed, 4 swallow species - Purple Martin, Tree Swallow, Northern Rough-winged and Barn, also 7 Scarlet Tanagers, 5 Indigo Buntings, 2 male Baltimore Orioles, and 4 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. (The complete list is below) It was a perfect, warm spring day for birding. Thanks to Diana Worley for the brownies and Lynda Mayhorn's home made fried apple pies that that kept us going when hunger set in. At the end of the day we returned again to the Mayhorn home to enjoy Lynda Mayhorn's delicious spaghetti with garlic bread and home made Ding Dong cake, a great ending for a great day of birding with friends. Those birding were Don Carrier, Roger Lemaster, Roger Mayhorn, Daryl Owens, Mike Sanders, Ed Talbott III and Dave and Diana Worley Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt 63 species Wild Turkey 1 Turkey Vulture 2 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Red-shouldered Hawk 1 Killdeer 1 Mourning Dove 8 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 24 Belted Kingfisher 1m Red-bellied Woodpecker 3 Hairy Woodpecker 2m Downy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 1 Pileated Woodpecker 1 Eastern Phoebe 2 White-eyed Vireo 1 Yellow-throated Vireo 2 Blue-headed Vireo 2 Red-eyed Vireo 11 Blue Jay 7 American Crow 7 Purple Martin 7 (6 m, 1f) Tree Swallow 3 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 5 Barn Swallow 4 Carolina Chickadee 2 Tufted Titmouse 11 White-breasted Nuthatch 3 Carolina Wren 7 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 4 Eastern Bluebird 2m Wood Thrush 4 American Robin 4 Gray Catbird 1 Brown Thrasher 1 Blue-winged Warbler 4 Northern Parula 4 Yellow Warbler 3 Yellow-rumped Warbler 1m Black-throated Green Warbler 7 Yellow-throated Warbler 4 Cerulean Warbler 3m Black-and-white Warbler 4 American Redstart 5 (4m, 1f) Worm-eating Warbler 1 Swainson's Warbler 1 Ovenbird 7 Louisiana Waterthrush 2 Kentucky Warbler 1 Hooded Warbler 15 Scarlet Tanager 7 (5m, 2f) Eastern Towhee 3 Chipping Sparrow 2 Song Sparrow 1 Northern Cardinal 4 (3m, 2f) Indigo Bunting 5m Red-winged Blackbird 2 Eastern Meadowlark 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 8 (6m,2f) Baltimore Oriole 2m Rose-breasted Grosbeak 4 (2m, 2f) House Finch (1m, 1f) American Goldfinch 6
