Roger: What a difference a day makes. We had a complete turnover of birds
here in the last day or so. At first the Goldfinches were dominant. Now
this morning the Pine Siskin now outnumber the Goldfinches. Yesterday was
quite unusual as we had heavy rain, followed by dropping temps, and then
heavy sleet for several hours during the evening. Snow was fairly heavy in
points just a few miles north of us. We got a few flakes here, mostly sleet
or freezing rain. Lot of birds this morning at the feeders on top and on
the ground. It was overcast and did not lend to good picture quality. I
had to shoot from about 40 to 50 feed and did not have a good field of view
as they would flush with any movement and I would have to wait until they
returned.
I was able to only identify one Goldfinch on the ground in my first
group picture among the Siskin. The Siskin have taken over most of the
Nyjer feeders. I attached a couple of the feeder shots. Later in the day
as it remained colder than normal I would check out the window and would
sometimes see a greater number of Goldfinches. I also had some Orange
Crowned Warblers and the usual local residents, Woodpeckers, a White
Breasted and Red Breasted Nuthatch. The Red Breast is rare down here in
these parts.
Hopeful I will be able to get more pictures as the weather clears. Never
got to freezing so much of the Sleet buildup was gone before I went out this
morning.
