I noticed today that there are about 11 active cliff swallow nests on the
northern side and the eastern end of the J.P.Carico bridge over the New River
(rt 94) in Grayson County, VA. This bridge was finished in July, 2011 after the
old one was removed and is thus slightly less than four years old. The nests
are just below the upper railing and a considerable distance up in the air and
only distantly seen from the bank below.

The nearest cliff swallows nesting to this site that I am aware of are
downstream at the so-called low water bridge just below Fries, VA.

At least here is one bird that benefits from highways and bridges!

We have perhaps 3-5 pairs of willow flycatchers in the immediate area around
our house in Baywood. I found one nest with three eggs on June 13 in the same
red twigged dogwood bush that had a nest last year.
