Tom Hunter joined us after lunch. The beautiful weather and cooperative birds made for an excellent day in the field. Raptors and sparrows were particularly active. We had 8 raptor species including both vultures, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks, a Golden Eagle, and an American Kestrel. Members of the sparrow family were American Tree, Chipping, Field, Song, White-throated, White-crowned, Dark-eyed Junco, and Eastern Towhee. We also found five of the seven likely woodpeckers missing the Red-headed and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. The Great Blue Heron rookery below the power plant was active with five birds seen on nests and several more flying around in the vicinity. The complete list of species is below.
