Eight BCBC members took part in an unofficial Breeding Bird Survey of the Buchanan County CBC circle Saturday, June 18, 2011. Seventy-nine species were counted with some interesting finds. Jerry and Jane Thornhill had two unusual birds, the first Veery to be found in the county during the breeding season and a rare for the county Blue Grosbeak. Both birds were found on Keen Moutain, the Veery near the entrance to the Keen Mt Park Area and the Blue Grosbeak at the parking lot near the prison. Tom and Laverne Hunter also had two good finds, two Summer Tanagers and a Black-billed Cuckoo, both species being unusual for the area, especially during the breeding season. Scarlet Tanagers were numerous throughout the count area with 47 being recorded. Mike Sanders and I found 6 singing male Cerulean Warblers here on Compton Mountain, and David Raines found one in the Horn Mountain Area. Four Blue-winged Warblers were found during the count but unfortunately, no Golden-wings. We also found 3 Swainson's Warblers singing on territory at the Head of Slate Creek, a mile or so north of Compton Mountain. The most numerous warbler of the survey was the Hooded with 47 being recorded, which beat the usually more numerous Ovenbird of which 29 were logged. Attached is the complete survey count list. Many thanks to Tom & Laverne Hunter, Lynda Mayhorn, David Raines, Mike Sanders and Jerry & Jane Thornhill for participating in the survey. Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt
