The Gilmers report that they did not remove any eggs from the nest that was
being frequented by both Eastern Bluebird and Tree Swallow adults. All the
eggs hatched. Both species continue to visit the nest box on a regular
basis. This appears to be a joint parenting effort by two species that
normally compete for space.

Another nesting story involves the nest in our front entranceway. It was
originally built several years ago by Eastern Phoebes. About 4 or 5 years
ago, after the phoebes fledged, it was used by Barn Swallows to raise a
brood. The following year, Carolina Wrens remodeled it slightly and raised
young. This continued through last summer. The wrens also used it as a
place to sleep through the winters. The phoebes moved to the outside light
on our garage. This year, phoebes have reclaimed the porch nest. It's
surprising to me that a single nest would be used for so many seasons by so
many species.
