We didn't get any of the snow today that many people in the area got, but
some of the birds made more trips to the feeders today, as if they knew it
was nearby. That was especially true of the 48 Mourning Doves that came to
the feeders this morning along with 24 Goldfinches.
It may have been the feeling that snow was coming that brought a male
Sharp-shinned hawk to hunt birds at the feeders this afternoon. It made a
couple of passes by the feeders then perched in our Mulberry tree for a few
minutes before diving into a large blueberry bush in the hope of driving out
some cardinals that had taken refuge there. The cardinals just moved around
inside the thick bush so the Sharpie finally gave up and flew off down into
the woods.
Yesterday a Mockingbird came in to feed on the berries from the Beautyberry
bush. Even though the leaves have been killed by the cold weather the
berries remain attached to the branches, and the birds are making use of
them. Here is a photo of the Mockingbird.
