Four birders of the Russell County and Buchanan County bird clubs birded The
Cove in Tazewell County today. In spite of the threat of rain the weather
was beautiful though a little warm. Yellow Warblers and Prairie Warblers
were in abundance as were both Baltimore and Orchard Orioles. Early in the
day the group was surprised to find a Bald Eagle gliding in the blue among a
flock of vultures. No Red-headed Woodpeckers were found this year, but
Red-bellied, Downy, Northern Flicker and Pileated were all found. Four
species of vireos, Red-eyed, White-eyed, Warbling and Yellow-throated were
all counted. Five species of flycatchers were logged. They were Acadian,
Willow, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Wood Pewee and Eastern Kingbird.
63 species was the total for the day. Those participating were Don Carrier,
Clancey Deel, Roger Mayhorn and Daryl Owens.
Below is the complete species list for the day.
