On Sunday (Feb 9) Daryl Owens and I birded from Compton Mt down Slate Creek to Grundy, then up Little Prater to Southern Gap (Poplar Gap) in hopes of finding unusual winter birds. We didn't find anything that unusual, but we did have a great raptor day with 2 Northern Harriers at Southern Gap, 2 Red-shouldered Hawks, 3 Red-tailed Hawks and 4 American Kestrels. At Southern Gap we found both Horned larks and Eastern Meadowlarks. We also had 5 woodpecker species for the day. The comeplete species list follows the photos below. This Red-shouldered Hawk perched near the road which allowed me to get this photo, though it was against an overcast sky. This male American Kestrel searched for food during a misty rain.
