Does that mean that more of them appear down south where the winters are 
milder?

  When I used to visit my father in law in late summer in Alabama – I saw bald 
Cardinals commonly.  Apparently if the weather doesn’t get cold enough to kill 
off the mites, they really go to town on these birds
