Don't forget the RCBC annual banquet next Tuesday, September 23. If you haven't made a reservation, email Janice Martin <mailto:redwing@xxxxxxx> to do so. Our speaker is Dave Raines whom most birders in the area know. He's a magnet for unusual birds. As he was driving a school bus one winter morning, he spotted a gull in the middle of the road. He stopped and studied it carefully finally deciding he had found a Ross's Gull. This is an Arctic of Northeastern Asia which migrates along the northern coast of Alaska. One year, he had a Harris's Sparrow make an extended stay in his yard. This bird breeds in Canada and typically winters in the central U. S. down into Texas. A Long-billed Curlew was a visitor to Dave's neighborhood a few years ago bring birders from miles around to see it. Just last year at his Sparrow Day outing, a Swainson's Hawk made an appearance. Swainson's Hawk is a common Buteo out west but is not often seen in the east. Dave's topic is Why Birding?:What inspired us and what keeps us going? As you can see from these examples Dave has plenty of inspiration. Come and maybe some of the magnetism will rub off. Come prepared to share your own inspiration for birding and your reasons for continuing. This will be a fun evening. Janice can provide menu details and directions to the banquet site. Jerry
