Yesterday turned out to be a fantastic birding day for me here at our place
on the mountain. Our stream seemed like a magnet pulling different species
in for a drink or a bath. The day began with a Great Horned Owl calling
softly from a large pine tree across the valley at our neighbor's. The
highlight of the day was when a male Blackpoll came down to our stream to
drink and bathe. We almost never see Blackpolls during the spring migration,
so that was a treat. The next pleasant surprise was an adult Orchard Oriole
singing from a tree. It later came down to bathe in the stream. It was
accompanied by an immature male Orchard Oriole that came down to the stream
with it. I thought this may be a father and son pair. The fact that both
birds had slightly crossed bills made me think the two were probably related
and the genetic defect had been passed on. A beautiful male Indigo Bunting
came down to the stream also. I saw 8 warbler species throughout the day.
They were Blackpoll, Yellow Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, Yellow-rumped
Warbler, Ovenbird, American Redstart, Yellow-throated Warbler and Hooded
Warbler.
A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak kept stopping by to eat sunflower seeds from
the platform feeder, and 7 Pine Siskins were busy feeding from the nyjer
feeder. Two White-throated Sparrows were still hanging around. They should
leave any day for northern climes where they will nest. A Field Sparrow was
also drawn in by the cool water of the stream. During the morning 3
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds were feeding at our feeder. Now the number has
grown to 10.
All totaled I counted 43 species for the day. The complete list is below.
This male Blackpoll is one of the several species I photographed. More
photos of the day can be seen at my PBase site at
