Backwards compatibility really isn't a big deal to me right now actually.
We'll probably keep the Xbox 360 around for a bit.
From what I have read, seems like the ps4 has a little more horsepower for
gaming, but I don't know that that would even matter to me.
I do like how with PlayStation you get free games as long as you keep
paying for online play, which is only $60 a year.
Does have more kid friendly games than the other?

Here are my jumbled thoughts on the two:
Exclusives are becoming more rare but the uncharted series is on ps and
that is a great series that is action adventure. For Xbox, halo and tomb
raider are the most popular exclusives. Although tomb raider was a timed
exclusive and will be coming out on ps in a month or so ,a year after
release on pc and Xbox.
Most rpgs come out on both. Netflix on both is a decent experience
although I would lean xbone on that one.
The PS crowd has always been a little more hardcore and less social. The
xbox crowd is more social but that comes with more kiddos on.
Getting Xbox live/ps plus has netted some decent free games each month. It
is a yearly fee but I personally don't mind because most multiplayer is
locked behind that pay wall and you get some free games each month. Plus
you can find deals through the year to take that cost down a bit. The games
you get are free as long as you keep the subscription active.
Backwards compatible games important seems to be the deciding factor in
your case, from what I know.
