I’ll be the first to admit I can be a bit of a nag when it comes to what I
perceive to be correct weapon handling and muzzle direction. As an
instructor my goal is to create students that can successfully deal with
the three liabilities – Tactical, Criminal & Civil - Taylor says are
involved in the use of deadly force. Those that have attended any of his
courses know you can lose a lot of points on the tests for improper weapon
handling which in turn should tell you how important he believes that
ability is as it can affect any or all of the three.
While most errors I see are not a safety issue on the range, the same
actions in your living room or on the street would be very much
unacceptable. Others, like improper reholstering, are unsafe anywhere. The
common cause for most of these, and one that is easy to correct, is *failing
to keep your wrist locked*. From the second you get a firing grip on the
gun in your holster until it is back in the holster, with the exception of
when actually pressing the magazine release button, your wrist should be
locked. First, you now actually have control of the gun, secondly it is
much harder to point the muzzle at your hip (not uncommon) when
reholstering. Loading, unloading, Tactical reloads, etc. all are done more
efficiently with a locked wrist. Add keeping the elbows tight to the body
and keeping the muzzle down range becomes hard not to do.
Focus on keeping the wrist locked the next few times you dry practice or go
to the range and you’ll find it’s not hard to do and everything works
better.

Dear Frank:
We released two reports this week. One shows that the FBI's estimate of
active shooter attacks stopped during 2014 to 2017 by concealed handgun
permit holders was just half what it was (it was 16.5%, not 8%). We raised
these errors with the FBI and pointed out that they had other cases that
were the same with the exception that they didn't involve a civilian
stopping the attack that they had included. A recent report that we had
done on gun control lies by Vox.com was updated to include responses to a
similar piece in the New York Times. The Vox.com piece had something over
20 million hits and the New York Times article has also garnered much
attention. See a link below for a talk that I just gave in California on
these gun control lies.
The two op-eds that we had responded to a list of the top-10 gun control
laws that Nick Kristof listed in the New York Times and an amazing, but
little covered, video by the Parkland where he explicitly explained why he
made the attack. The Parkland killer's motivation was to get media
attention. He wanted the media to mention his name, but he still believed
he benefited merely from the news media mentioning his crime. The media
probably didn't like the way this explicitly stated reason made them look,
so it wasn't too surprising that this explicit statement from the killer
got little coverage.
