Hi Riva,
We do Summer Reading BINGO. We have an ice cream sandwich party in the
library for anyone who gets a BINGO. If you read 10 books or more you get
the ice cream sandwich and a small prize (cute animal eraser or something),
and if you get a blackout you get both prizes plus I'll buy them a book.
We ended up with a lot of blackouts (25) so that cost quite a bit, but we
were thrilled so many people read 25 books during the summer.
We also had some raffle prizes at the ice cream sandwich party. We had a
few signed books, some journals, and other small prizes. The raffle prizes
really added excitement to the party which we held in the 2nd or 3rd week
of school. Good luck!

Hi BAISL,
Happy summer (or almost summer for those that are not yet out of school)!
My curriculum director wishes to know if there is a program or organization
that will recycle textbooks. I do not have any experience in this area and
was wondering if you had any recommendations. I think there may have been a
thread at some point about this but I cannot seem to find it.
I've done some quick research and found some organizations that will accept
old textbooks at a price. Our city will also accept books for recycling but
the process sounds cumbersome now that China & Thailand are not accepting
certain recyclable materials.
Any suggestions or recommendations?

We send most of our textbooks to College track. My city library (I live in
San Carlos) will take anything - I sometimes feel badly about the old
library books I give them but they say it's fine as long as I don't bring
too many at once. You might want to check your local library. I know the
city of Palo Alto will take textbooks in their recycling program; not sure
if that is done in other cities.

Hello all,
I am piloting a "Summer Reading Bingo" game this year, with boards for
grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8, to encourage diverse reading. Each square names a
genre of fiction or subject focus of nonfiction, or a descriptor such as
"takes place in another country," "award-winner," etc. I'm trying to come
up with an incentive for completing the challenge (reading 5 in a row) and
for reading multiple rows, or the entire board.
For those of you also doing something like this, what incentive(s) do you
offer that feel cost effective, not too hard on non-participating students,
and age-appropriate? Thank you for sharing! (And yes, I really should have
worked this out a month ago! Where did May go?) :D
