I second the suggestion for Learning Ally. We've found that our students
really love having the audio support. Our school pays an annual building
license fee based on number of students. We are in the <299 student
category and pay $1099 per year. Almost 20% of our students have been
using it.
I looked up the Joy Luck Club in Learning Ally. This is the version that
they are reading (it is voice and text together, so student can follow the
highlighted text as they listen):

I administer a yearly subscription and provide student support for it
through our library and it's well worth it - I highly recommend. It has the
added benefit of allowing students to cite text and take notes, inside of
the app, which is a major bonus for student using Learning Ally for
curriculum text. It' a flat fee for the school, as opposed to a
per-text/use price.

CD players with the CDs. Only a couple local libraries have the CDs in
their collection and in those cases they are checked out, some with holds.
On ebay, there is one copy available, and we could purchase that, but it
doesn't meet our need of three copies.
We considered Audible on Amazon, but the kids don't have Amazon accounts
and we're not quite sure how to purchase for them without the titles going
into our own personal Audible accounts.
We spent a couple hours looking into this yesterday and were surprised
by how little possibilities we encountered.
Brilliant colleagues: do you have ideas and suggestions for us?
