Welcome back to school everyone!
I appreciated the input several of you offered about Freshman Orientation over
the summer. Some of you asked for a follow-up email about what we ended up
doing, so here it is!
We only had about 25 minutes per group, each group was anywhere from 60-90
students including the upperclassmen Big Brothers. We repeated our library
“show/tour” six times starting at 8:30 and ending at 11:40. It seemed to be
very well received by the freshmen and the Big Brothers.
Here’s what we did:
Bring the boys into our theatre (inside the Library) while this 1:30 minute
“PowToon” was running. See it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYZBou6FzI4
While the groups were arriving the students saw the video 3-4 times.
When everyone was seated, we stopped the video and I introduced myself and our
two staff members. Then I told them that I hoped they were watching the video
because I had some questions for them and they could win “very high-value
prizes.” These prizes were nifty bright blue Bellarmine pencils. It’s amazing
how exciting pencils can be! I asked about 10 questions, moving around the
theatre, calling on different guys. They seemed to get a big kick out of it.
Then we divided the big group into 3 smaller groups for the tour. I had asked
the Big Brothers ahead of time to divide themselves up. Then each of the
library staff took a group and starter the library tour in a different place in
the Library (like they do for college tours). The three of us had met on
Friday to put together our talking points for the tour so hopefully we all
covered mostly the same information. But by the 5th tour I have to admit I was
getting pretty punchy and I’m sure I left out something! ☺
Then we sent them on their way and welcomed the next bunch.
Several of the boys thought the PowToon cartoon was really cool and it
certainly got their attention! The great thing about it was I already had their
attention when I stopped the video and so I could launch right into the
introductions without trying to get them to settle down, etc. I found the
PowToon fairly easy to create and I used only free images and tools provided by
PowToon (I did not buy a subscription). It took me a few hours probably to
learn it from scratch and create this video. So if you enjoy such things I
encourage you to try it out!
Best wishes for a great 2016-17!!

Subject: [baisl] What do you include in a Freshman Orientation?
Hello Colleagues!
I hope you are enjoying the last few weeks of summer vacation. Since this is
my first year as library director at Bellarmine I have been working hard to get
prepared (yikes!!!).
I will get about 30 minutes with each freshman English class to give them
“Library Basics”. I have a few things on my list but I am interested in
hearing what you include in your freshman orientation programs (if you have
one).
I’m also looking for interactive things to do so it’s not just me talking at
them. We will do a quick tour of the library but I had a suggestion from a
teacher to do a book scavenger hunt to help teach them the Dewey system a
little. This may work but with high school boys it’s a fine line between
fun/instructional and too juvenile. Is anyone doing anything “cool” with their
high schooler’s?
Any input would be most appreciated!
Thanks so much,
Tana Perotin
