Like Joëlle, the catalog is available to the students right away (K-8). For
the youngest students I do the search for them and explain what I am doing. I
give individual lessons to students who are interested. In 4th grade I do a
series of lessons around key word search and how to understand the catalog
records. I always add funny words or instructions to the catalog in the
book summary so they have something specific to search for. For example, I
might challenge them to find a specific copy of a Riordan book. When they
get there, they follow the instructions on the screen- which is "Write
Banana in your notebook"
Once I forgot to remove the word after the lesson and someone found it two
years later, they were very excited to find it!

between the books and the catalog, most of them want to try to find books
on their own. They often are unable to spell right, and might need adult
support to process the search, which I am happy to do during check-out
time. It really depend on the student. The range of reading at that age can
be so great, I want to make sure that those who are ready can experience
the library at a higher level. I even go through with the ones who need
spelling help in order to encourage their will to learn and their
curiosity. It is one more active way for them to learn how to spell. I
usually demonstrate the catalog to them around January, but I give them a
copy of the word they have to search for.

differences between information and fiction, so that by end of
2nd/beginning of 3rd grade they are ready for a formal intro to call
numbers/Dewey, and independent searches. Of course, there are always those
children who figure it out on their own, which is fine, too.
