Synergy School, located at 1387 Valencia Street, San Francisco, seeks a
part-time school librarian.  The position would start in the 2015-2016
school year.

Synergy School Librarian position description

Part Time—2 days a week; 15 hours per week

Synergy School is a progressive, independent K-8 school with a vibrant,
diverse community and a commitment to social justice. Since 1973, the
school has been providing a quality education by empowering children to
flourish academically, to blossom as individuals, and to become
self-confident, creative learners. Classrooms are mixed grade. Since its
inception, Synergy has been structured as a teachers’ cooperative.

The Wilma Messing Library, dedicated in 2001, promotes literacy, fosters
love of reading, supports the school's curriculum, and creates a place
where inquisitive young minds feel welcome to explore. Our students are
strong, voracious readers. Students describe our library as small but
mighty. The collection includes print and online resources. The online
books and databases were added in August 2014 after successful fundraising.

The ideal candidate should love children, reading, teaching, story-telling,
and sharing ideas. A wide knowledge of children’s literature -- from
picture books through young adult titles -- is essential for Readers’
Advisory of students, teachers, and parents. Candidate must also have a
strong knowledge of and commitment to teaching 21st century digital
literacy skills.

Job Activities:


   Encourages wide reading in diverse genres and formats both for learning
   and enjoyment (Readers’ Advisory).

   Teaches library and information literacy skills to grades Young K
   through fifth grade during regular weekly library classes.

   Collaborates with teachers, especially Young K through fifth grade.

   Supervises parent library liaisons and works with the library committee.

   Supervises student library volunteers.

   Updates Scope and Sequence of Library Skills, Collection Development
   Policy, and other library documents as needed.

   Selects books and electronic resources to support the curriculum and
   student reading needs.

   Develops, catalogs, and maintains the collection. Maintains catalog,
   patron, and circulation records using Alexandria.

   Manages the library budget (for materials, books, and electronic

   Works with the library committee to raise funds to supplement the
   library budget.

   Communicates with parents and community via the library blog



   Master’s degree in Library & Information Science

   State certification as School Librarian (preferred, required by public
   schools in CA)
