After the Harker/University presentation at the BAISL meeting in October
(was it really October? ) I loved this program, and have shamelessly taken
much of it to adapt to the Mercy ideas here. I have all the teachers, and
much of the staff on board and enthusiastically participating. The girls
were very excited to get their own choice. There was a lot of work done on
my part, but I think it will all be worth it. See my summer reading book
clubs page here.
<https://www.mercyhsb.com/academics/libraryasc/summerreading> My thanks to
the presenters at that meeting!
Now to see if the girls actually do the reading.

Hello,
I happen to know of a pretty amazing summer reading program at The Harker
School. I met with Laurie Vaughan, the Upper School Librarian, and she told
me about it. I'm pretty sure she is presenting it at ALA in New Orleans.
I'd like to implement the program when Stratford opens our high school in
2019.

We abandoned our summer reading requirement many years ago (I don’t know
why) but I would love to bring it back.
I’m wondering if any of our member high schools run a summer reading
program. Please chime in if you do, I’m looking for ideas for next summer
actually (too late for this one).
Thanks!

HI Anne, I create a large summer reading list and then I encourage all
the students to participate in their local public library summer reading
programs. I talk them up and then have the students bring me their summer
reading program forms, or lists and I give little prizes to those
participants in the fall. Since most summer reading programs have great
prizes I talk that part up as well to the students. Hope this helps. : Lisa

Good morning,
Hope this finds all you fabulous librarians thriving amidst this busy end
of the school year! Congratulations for all the wonderful work you do in
your school community.
Would anyone be willing to share ways that you encourage summer reading?
Do you collaborate with teachers on summer reading lists? Do you host a
challenge that you reward in the Fall?
One of my colleagues suggested running a challenge that would reward the
class who reads the most books over the Summer. I am picturing this for our
lower grades (1-5) but we also have middle school.
Thanks so much!
Anne
