Hi Anne,

We have been in a mobile library setup for the last couple of years as our
new learning commons space nears completion, and our YA books currently
live in the 7th & 8th grade English classroom. For the last year we've had
an iPad mini set up as a self-checkout terminal, attached to a bookcase on
a gooseneck clamp

We have both catalog and circulation apps (we use Follett Destiny)
installed and students are able to search for library materials (Destiny
Quest/Destiny Discover) as well as check items in and out and see their
current checkouts. It works well for our 7th & 8th graders, and we envision
using it on a more widespread basis once we move into the new building,
where our older students will use the upper learning commons more
independently!

We take the exact same approach as Tana does at Bellarmine. I love talking
to the kids both during the search and at checkout. It's important and it
helps us be more fully integrated in the academic and personal reading
lives of our students. It also helps me make better purchasing choices.

We have a touchscreen monitor computer set at the desk for students to
search for books. We often work with students there.

one desktop computer dedicated to online catalog searching for students.
This computer is at the circulation desk so if we see a student getting
frustrated or wearing that “what am I doing?” look on his face we can
gently offer assistance.



We do not have a self-checkout and I don’t want one. Checking out the
books is one of the primary points of contact we have with our students and
I wouldn’t want to give it up.  We take the opportunity to chat with the
student, suggest similar books he might like and offer help if we can tell
he’s obviously working on one of the sophomore or junior year research
papers.

Good morning Librarians,



Does anyone have a recommendation for a self service kiosk in the
Library? I am envisioning a touch pad screen (possibly just a tablet) that
is affixed to the end of a bookshelf near the entrance of our Library. I
want the online catalog to be more accessible and appealing to students to
search books independently. It would be wonderful if I could also use this
as check out station.



We are preschool through middle school.



Can you point me to some resources so that I may put it on our wish list
for next year?



Please share your experiences as well.
