I'm not sure what you mean here. If you mean textbooks for the students to
use, I don't do that. If an English class is reading a book that I think
would be a valuable addition I will buy it but then we keep it behind the
desk for use in the library while that class is taught, other wise they
sometimes walk away. Sometimes we can get desk copies from vendors that we
keep at the library desk.
If a teacher wants a book that is then going to live in that teacher's
classroom I suggest using department funds. If a teacher asks for a large
number of books (that's a subjective term!) to be bought and held at the
library desk for student use, I negotiate. We have a teacher now who has
asked for a lot of books/videos over the past three years and I've been
more selective this year about what I actually buy for him (he also tends
to keep them in his room after saying he won't do that which is annoying).
But mostly it depends on whether the book will be of general interest or
us, or if just it's something that teacher doesn't want to pay for. I also
prioritize teachers who don't often ask for books - if a math teacher I
rarely see asks for a $12 novel I usually buy it as a goodwill measure.
