Our Literacy Chats are during our Monday Morning Community Meeting which is
our weekly all school assembly. Alongside announcements, PSAs from Student
Services, and student-led presentations, we demonstrate that TMS values
reading!

photos of what your library looks like after you made this change. I would
love to hear more about what is Musical Books, Book Spine Poetry, and what
types of trivia contests you do to promote reading. Thanks!

@Cathy: I love the idea of a visual on the library ceiling representing
the number of books each grade has read. Maybe I'll borrow your idea next
school year if that is okay with you. We are a K-12 school, so we would
have a lot more different colors. Kudos to you for an innovative idea! :)

We've used a multipronged approach in recent years in the MS. Classroom
libraries were created in the English classrooms (I have mixed feelings
about this), required reading became titles selected from a list rather
than individual assigned titles (the summer options are a long list), and
book discussions happen in small groups according to the titles selected.
All students choose a book from a particular genre for each unit and have
5-6 titles to choose from. We're also running a joint program/competition
to see which grade reads more books - hopefully this photo will go through,
but if not, we have a long three-colored chain hanging from the ceiling
with a sign marking the end of each month. Each link in the chain
represents 10 books read. Each grade has a different color but we haven't
told them yet which is which. They have been reading lots of books and I'm
really hoping this habit carries forward into upper school. The most
important thing that's worked for us is allowing choice so students can
select books they are interested in.
