This reminds me of a rule we try to enforce – No printing from web pages. The web is designed to be viewed online NOT printed. That is why a single page on a screen will often print over 10 pages. (Years ago, a student printed an encyclopedia “page”. The job ended up being over 10,000 pages long. Luckily, the printer ran out of paper at about 800 ☺) We ask students to copy / paste to a word processor before printing. This doesn’t always happen, but if we see a wasteful job coming through, I remind the students why we have this rule in place. However, there have been two issues I have noticed: -Some students don't know how to control printing from websites and wind up printing 10 pages and throwing 9 of them away. which is a waste since I don't charge for pages they don't need. -Some students who do not have the cash will charge it to their student account and run up a bill, which is hard to get them to pay as it accumulates. I have only been here for 4 months, and I have dabbled in finding a print card system, where students can only print if they have a card with cash on it, and that gets charged. This will solve the above two issues: they pay for all pages they print, whether needed or not (hopefully this makes them more careful) and also eliminates this account charge system. My college library had this system. So far I have not been able to find a company that can set this up and do not know the cost. This is also particularly intriguing because there would then not be loose cash in the library. Let me know if anyone has this card system in their library, or another system that may work better. Thank you! Rules are: -if it's not for school, do not print it. If you print it anyways, it's 5 cents a page. -if it's for school and under 10 pages, print it for free. If it's over 10 pages, pages 11 and above are 5 cents a page. 5 cents a page - and that's for a B&W only printer. It'd be more expensive if we had color printing. In the last couple months the amount of paper being used and wasted has been incredible!. We're debating whether to implement some kind of copy management software and are wondering what others are experiencing. - Do you offer free unlimited printing in the library? - If no, how do you manage student printing? - If you use a print copy management system, what is it and what have been the pro/cons?
