thanks for bringing this up. In case it's of interest, here's an email I
sent to the elementary/middle selection committee back in August about the
initial work we did on the high school selection committee.
Greetings, all,
I had the pleasure of working on the development of the HS consortium ebook
collection together with Melaine Huyck-Aufdermaur, Joanne Melinson, Sarah
Murphy, Jan Patton, and Jessica Simmons. I thought it might be useful to
share a few details of our process.
A group of us met in person and considered our priorities. We decided that
selecting titles individually would be too cumbersome of a task, so instead
we outlined a set of priorities for our collection. Our list of specs
included not only information about the kinds of materials we wanted, but
also about the pricing and circulation models we preferred. We sent this

to Overdrive and asked for their collection development specialist to
propose a core collection of materials for us.
Once we had their list of suggested titles based on our guidelines we spent
a couple of weeks reviewing and evaluating it. We put their lists into a
shared Google Sheet so that we could share our comments. We also built a
list of items we wanted that were not on their list. Then we sent this back
to them for final pricing.
We decided to spend about 70% of our budget in the initial purchase. The
intent was to have funds to purchase new items released during the year and
to be responsive to patron requests. We will also be able to see which
items accrue multiple holds and can purchase additional copies of in-demand
titles.

for the shared collection. I believe we're going to bring these to the next
full BAISL meeting for ratification. As other folks have mentioned, we've
also been in the process of reviewing materials generously offered for
donation to the shared collection by member librarians. That review is done
with an eye to the goals laid out in the above linked policies.

Now in our second semester begins, the high school selection committee is
looking into making purchases with the remaining funds in our shared
budget. We will likely purchase some new releases, as well as additional
copies of high demand titles already in the collection. This would be a

I have finally launched the shared Overdrive collection at JCHS. I
noticed that there are only about 250 books that seem appropriate for HS
