Registration Now Open for Three NEH-Funded Institutes in California hosted
by Regional Sites of the California History-Social Science Project

Militarization: World War II and the Bay Area Home Front
June 27-July 1 and July 11-15, 2016 (The UC Berkeley History-Social Science
Project, the UC Berkeley Dept. of History, Oral History Center, & the
Bancroft Library, along with the National Park Service). Study the impact of
World War II on the economy, demography, culture, and social relations of
the San Francisco Bay Area, in particular, as a means for understanding the
broader effects of the World War II and the Home Front throughout the United
States through physical landmarks, oral histories, film, fiction, academic

<http://railroad.historyproject.ucdavis.edu/> The Transcontinental
Railroad: Transforming California and the Nation
July 10-15 and July 24-29, 2016 (The History Project at UC Davis, the UC
Davis Dept. of History, & the California State Railroad Museum). Explore the
Transcontinental Railroad from its conceptual origins, through feats of
labor and engineering, and onto its national impact. See how the
Transcontinental Railroad inaugurated a national transportation and
communications network and transformed the lives of everyone it touched --
for better or for worse. The rail line made possible the mass settlement of
the West while destroying the homes of Plains Indians and bison. It created
class and cultural conflict throughout California as financiers and
developers harvested capital and labor for its construction. For more

California
June 19-24, and June 26-July 1, 2016. (CSU Long Beach History Project,
CSULB History Department, the California Science Center, JPL, Long Beach
Airport, & the Wende Museum). Explore the development of the
"Sunbelt"-aerospace-driven economic growth, rapid demographic and suburban
expansion, white cultural dominance in the midst of ethnic diversity, and
expanding public higher education-as a story of Southern California and of
the nation as a whole. Read and discuss important historical texts with
leading historians, visits Cold War Sunbelt sites and regional museums, and
explore an outstanding collection of digital primary source materials. For

Selected applicants will receive a $1200 stipend which can be used to help
cover travel and lodging expenses.
