We have a room in the library that we use as a maker space. We have 3D printers
but focus on arts and craft supplies/projects, programming, and robotics for
K-5. Our middle school science teachers run another space on campus that has a
laser cutter and power tools.
The space and the program continue to develop and grow as we have time to focus
on them. Some projects/materials are built into the library curriculum; others
are made available informally at recesses or as after school classes.

Hi Debra,
We have two tinkering teachers, both of whom have additional responsibilities
as well -- one as a technology specialist, the other as the garden teacher. Our
tinkering lab, media center, and library all fall under the same department,
and we integrate as often as we can, but we serve discrete functions.
We are in the midst of a massive construction project that will bring our
library learning commons, media center, and tinkering space under the same
roof. Right now, the tinkering lab is in a portable, and within the next 48
hours our library will consist of an appropriated conference room and a storage
pod! Personally, I love to sew and create, so I hope to spend more time working
with our tinkering functions down the line!
You're welcome to come visit any time to meet our faculty and check out our
space. I'm happy to set up an introduction for you!
Cheers,

Debra,
we have a small space at one end of the library I am building into a
makerspace. I have an interest in making things, and love to play with the 3D
design software, arduino and so forth. The girls here make use of the space
with a monthly guided (somewhat) project - this month needle felting, next
month making key fobs with the 3D printer. The Engineering club also does more
substantial projects. As Jessica says - the girls can be very independant, and
just having the basics is a good place to start.
I would highly recommend visiting Jessica's space - it is well set up, and well
used!

Dear Colleagues,
If you have a Maker Space, who oversees the robotics, electronics, wood shop,
sewing, laser cutting, programing or a combination of these skills?
As a librarian with a Masters Degree in Library Science, my duties have not
incorporated many of these skills, especially sewing machines.
Please get back to me ASAP about your experience with the Maker Spaces on your
campus.
