Hi Mary,
Thank you for taking the time to talk with me this morning. Here is the
information regarding the difference or overlap between the Gilder Lehrman
Institute and our collection:
Access to Adam Matthew Digital’s American History collection provides
access to all the historic documents. Videos, essays, etc. are available
through the Gilder Lehrman Institute and their affiliate membership.
The work we did with the Gilder Lehrman Institute was almost exclusively
with their paper document archive rather than the other media (videos,
essays) you see on their site. This was creating and indexing the digital
images of the documents. The Gilder Lehrman Institute can make up to 20% of
their collection available. We believe it’s around 10% of the complete
collection. So when you visit the Gilder Lehrman site, it’s the Primary
Sources and Gilder Lehrman Collection to which we’re referring when we’re
talking percentages. This would provide access to approximately 12,000
documents, whereas we will show over 60,000 over the two modules of *American
History, 1493-1945* <http://www.americanhistory.amdigital.co.uk>.
In summary, the Gilder Lehrman does have some original images of their
documents in their site but it amounts to less than 20% of what we have in

There are a handful of facsimiles in their site plus their catalogue
information but if you want access to all the high quality images of all
the documents through a more sophisticated search and browse system you do
so through our collection. Our collection is also very well set up in terms
of zooming in on the documents.
It’s the documents for primary source research to which we give complete
access. The other media of theirs we used was just to help with a little
context to the documents.
