The NCTA National Coordinating Site at the Program for Teaching East Asia at
the University of Colorado is offering five online seminars and book groups
in fall 2017. TEA's NCTA online courses are open to teachers throughout the
United States. Grade level and teaching assignment priorities vary by
course. Courses will be open for registration beginning August 10, 2017.

Group: Stories from the Post-Mao Reform Era (Sept. 29-Nov. 20, 2017)

This book group will consider the reform era initiated by Deng Xiaoping in
the decades of the 1980s and '90s. Through interviews conducted by Liao
Yiwu, an internationally recognized chronicler of Chinese society,
participants will consider first-hand accounts of the impact of a new
government's new directions and goals on Chinese lives. These stories
provide insights into how late 20th-century China was experienced and

In this four-module seminar, participating teachers will investigate some of
the key issues in China that are making headlines and demonstrating its
changing nature. Topics include Xi Jinping's recentralization of power,
territorial disputes with Taiwan and about the South China Sea, general
foreign policy strategy in the context of China's rise, demographic changes,

Open to teachers of world history nationwide, this 24-hour course will
explore Japan's overlooked international relations with Asia and its

(1600-1868). Participants will investigate teacher-developed lessons and
primary sources to use in their middle and high school world history
