Hi, Debra,
Christian visited our school last year. Even though we are 6-12 and he is
more familiar with visiting elementary schools, he did a lovely job. My
impression of him is that he's a gentle, kind sort of guy, perhaps a little
shy. I absolutely adore his artwork.
He spoke with our upper school art students about his career trajectory and
his artistic influences, and then they did a little experimentation with
mixed media inspired by his technique. He visited with a 6th grade art
class and read a couple of books to them. We had a good conversation about
The Dead Bird and why "sad" stories might sometimes be relevant even for
young children. He also did a grade-wide presentation for our 8s during
which they engaged in an art project that was an extension of some work
we'd on which been collaborating with the English department. The final
products were generally very good and were displayed in the dining room :)
All in all our day with him was a pleasure.
I've also talked with Matt de la Peña on more than one occasion about
having him visit our school. If you're bringing him in please let me know;
perhaps we can pool resources?
