[baisl] Re: Attribution for 3-D models (and attribution in general)

Hi guys,

In this case, I would default to “instructor decides.”  The ML8 handbook only
has this to say: “How to include such information [sources] in projects other
than the research paper is not yet a settled matter.” (p. 128 MLA Handbook 8th
:P)   Philosophically too, there is a difference between why we cite sources in
written academic work and acknowledging inspiration for art.  This may be a
fuzzy line between plagiarism and copyright/patent?

What do you all think?

Subject: [baisl] Re: Attribution for 3-D models (and attribution in general)

I'm not at the middle school level, but we ask students to use the I Made One
feature on Thingiverse, which gives credit to the original designer and shows
off their own print through the Thingiverse site.  I also tell them to make
sure they follow all CC licenses because some stuff does not allow for
modification.

I'd also be very interested to know if/how anyone is citing a 3D printed object
using MLA8 format for a project.

Hi all,
Our Design Lab Director is asking about how students should give proper credit
to designers of 3-D models that they then use and adapt for their own 3-D
printed materials.

I don't know about any standard for this. I encouraged him to have the students
make an effort to find the name and link of the original and include it any
documentation/artist statement/presentation that is required upon completion of
their project, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of a standard attribution
model for 3-D printed materials (for example, does MLA8 offer a format for
this?).

But it also brings me to a larger discussion I would love to have with the
group on what you require at the middle school level as far as citations go in
general? Are you teaching MLA8? Do you use Noodle Tools, or send them to a
citation generator? What about using images in PowerPoint presentations or
videos, etc.? Do you enforce that they only use images licensed for reuse and
have them cite them? How do you frame these conversations to make them less of
a drag? What would high school librarians expect freshman should already know
coming in?

Ok, I know that's a lot of questions, but I feel sometimes like I'm swimming
upstream trying to get kids and teachers to cite their sources, and want to try
setting a standard expectation. If there is already a discussion you can point
me to on this, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you!
Cassy
