Through our Director of Technology, Barbara Cohen, and our director of the
maker space, James Isom we have a designated maker space at our school for
the first full year of this new classroom. He is the maker makom design
lab teacher.
If you need any more information you could speak with Barbara Cohen about
it.
I am the librarian and see the kindergarten through fifth grade in the
lower school.

but was passionate about new technology, so I've taken numerous courses
online and face to face in order to better run our space. I teach 3D
design/printing, Illustrator/using the laser cutter, and do a summer camp
in the space, in addition to my regular librarian duties. I see the
library as a great place to offer this type of learning because we are open
to everyone not just students in a particular class.
The one thing you should know about running these types of a spaces and
the premise behind maker-centered learning is you are not required to be an
expert. The student can learn from each other, people in the community,
through online research, and they generally take the lead on their own
projects. I know just enough to keep the machines running and use the
software we have at the most basic level.

Library. We work as one department (3 Librarians who double as Innovation
Coaches and 3 Innovation Coaches) and I serve as the Upper School Librarian
as well as teaching Research & Reflection in the Makerspace 6 times a week.
I'm also the resident welder. The Maker Space Director is Curt Lewellyn,
and he and the other two Coaches are primarily in charge of the tools, but
we librarians do spend a fair amount of time over there as well for R&D

year and all 6 of us rotate through each department meeting to find
opportunities for collaboration. Our school has recently made a big move
towards Project Based Learning, and while that learning doesn't happen

design thinking and problem solving that goes on in both the library and

which is separate from the Library.
At times, I assist with the research piece of their projects in the
Library, but I do not handle the maker space curriculum , nor do I feel
qualified to do so.
That has never been part of my training (my masters is as a reading
specialist, and so I have enough on my plate serving as the lower school
librarian!)
I have made that clear to my school, and we all agree that my library
curriculum consists of three components: Literature, digital citizenship,
and library research skills.
