Students in the digital age have access to exponentially increasing amounts
of political information. Learn how school librarians can help students
navigate this information explosion and encourage successful civic-political
agency in a digital age. A high school's critical civic literacy curriculum
incorporated with the MacArthur Foundation's "Ten Questions for Change
Makers" is proposed as an example to bridge between theory and practice.
Participants will discuss practical steps to infuse the framework into their
own programs.

Fake news! Media bias! Coopted stories! Our students need to learn skills
and concepts to navigate and anchor themselves in the constant pulse and
flow of information. This session will present tools for librarians and
teachers to incorporate in media literacy lessons to give students
benchmarks to recognize bias, and spin, and to evaluate news based on an
understanding of journalistic standards.

In this age of information proliferation and the menacing propagation of
"fake news," it more important than ever that students learn to evaluate
information quality. We practice close reading for manipulative language
that colors an argument and slants interpretation, and we explore the
logical fallacy as a framework for teaching high school students how
evidence can be used and misused. This interactive session will provide
practical approaches to use with your students.
