I have 50 minute classes. I aim for 10 minutes for
announcements/stories/lessons, 20 minutes for an activity, and 20 minutes
for browsing and checkout. It doesn't always work out! Sometimes,
activities are going to take longer, and we're rushed for checking out
books, and sometimes we finish our activities so quickly that kids have too
much time to browse and some of them will get antsy to move on.
For Kindergarten, class time is 40 minutes and I spend 10 minutes for
announcements/stories/lessons, we might do a short 5 minute activity, and
then 25 minutes for browsing and checkout.
I almost never assign independent activities before grade 4, but instead
pair up or triple up students to complete activities.
