I hope this e mail finds you well. I am writing to introduce myself as
the newly-appointed b1 representative for the VI advisory group.
There are many of you whom I have had the pleasure of meeting and
playing with/against at sessions and tournaments, however I am keen to
make myself known to as many of those playing in the B1 category as
possible. With that in mind, if there are any players you are aware of
who are not signed up to the B1 tennis mailing list, and you have an e
mail address for them, could you please forward this on.
A little about me:
At the age of 32 I am a current England blind football international,
funded full-time by the English Football Association. I also work for
a company called Sports for Schools, visiting primary schools to
deliver fun fitness circuits and using my own story to try and inspire
children to persevere and achieve their dreams.
I am very much a multi-sport enthusiast, both as a player and an
aspiring coach. In the past I have represented my country at athletics
and cricket, and have recently started teaching P.E 1-to-1 to visually
impaired children in Cambridgeshire.
My introduction to blind tennis came in 2010, when along with a close
friend and fellow VI athlete, I set up SAVI Northwest (sports and
activities for visually impaired), based in Liverpool. We had grown
frustrated at the lack of opportunities available for VI people to
access sport on a local level. The first successful funding bid we had
was to run bblind tennis sessions. A challenge as both of us had never
really played tennis at all!
using skills from other sports I had played, and some tips from local
tennis coaches, I set about teaching myself to play, in order to coach
the other participants (predominantly b1s).
It is safe to say I have fallen in love with the sport, and am
passionate about developing the game further, especially in the b1
I have my own ideas about how I think the game can move forward for us
b1s, and I am just as keen to share them with you all as I am to hear
and represent your own ideas and opinions.
Below are my contact details. If possible, I would like to have a chat
with you all individually before the next advisory group meeting on
March 23rd. Idealy I would like this to be by phone, as I find this
more personable, but e mail is fine if that is more convenient.
If this is agreeable, just drop me a call or message using the details below:
E mail: roy.turnham@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
