[AZ-Observing] Re: official designation for our solar system?

I always thought that it was named “Bart”…

But seriously, the reason it’s called the “Solar System” is because we’ve named 
our central star “Sol”.  In general terms, it would be referred to as a 
planetary system if we were talking about another star’s system, or the Star’s 
Name System - i.e.: The Alpha Centauri System, the Denebian System, etc.

I sent a quick message to a friend at JPL and he responded simply “Sol System” 
since planetary systems are named after the central, or primary star.
