have a high western horizon, but I have seen Venus poking her nose above the
horizon starting a couple weeks ago. I haven't been able to tease Mercury out
of the muck yet. Too bad we had the beautiful weather last night (Saturday)
rather than for the HAC picnic on Friday. I wasn't able to make the picnic and
haven't heard how the attendance and the weather turned out. Hopefully okay,
same way with the AASP near Salome. Anyway, Saturday was good by the usual
standards of my backyard (which are pretty good), though I had to wait until
about 10pm for the high clouds to clear out. Through my 25-inch Dobsonian I was
able to make good observations of the galaxy clusters in Pegasus, Pisces, and
Fornax. Many galaxies were seen, but no supernova candidates that I could
detect. M31, M33 and M42 were all spectacular and Jupiter showed very nice
detail. I used an old 18mm Nagler eyepiece to give me approximately 200x for
all my observations. The seeing and transparency were good, though the seeing
became a little bumpy around 3am for a little while. The temperature got down
to about 45 degrees, but it felt comfortable most of the night. I see that Mars
is shining brightly, rivaling Regulus in Leo, but I didn't view it through my
telescope. I finally declared a victory at about 4:30am because the eyeballs
refused to cooperate anymore! Is amastro still active? I haven't seen any
posts in a long time...
