I suspect that most of us amateur astronomers are a bit more aware of our surroundings and are careful with our laser pointers when we see the trademark flashing lights. Also, if you've ever sat in a pilot's seat in a commercial aircraft, the angle of the laser would be a very low one to hit the pilot's eye. There aren't many stars worth pointing out at that level :-). Plus, if he was in the vicinity of Orange County / SNA, he wasn't looking at the stars anyway. Worst light pollution in that part of the LA Basin area. And don't get us all started on the "Homeland in-Security" issues in the case...
