Hi Steve,

Personally, I have been working out of a volume called "Celestial
Portraits". The book is a collection of the Astronomy magazine articles
written by Tom Polakis which ran from April 1998 through March 2004

I don't remember how I came to acquire the book but it contains
45 chapters (articles really), featuring the deep sky objects in one or more
constellations in the order they appear in the sky throughout the year.

When I don't have a set task at hand or just want to sit back, relax and not
have to think about what I want to observe, I pull it out, flip to a given
article and observe.

I think the book itself may be out of print (the author could probably let
you know) but I do understand that the whole series is still available
on-line as a download.

Hope that helps.

Thank you,

Jimmy Ray

Subject: [AZ-Observing] What do you use to make up an observing list?

Howdy all;

Well, I am working on the 2ed edition of Deep Sky Observing and I need some
input, please.

In the first version I spent some time talking about using Burnham's and one
or two other resources that are now out of print to create an observing
list.

So, my question is "what source to you use to create an observing list?"

I know some of you are working on a list from the Astronomical League and
some are using the SAC lists that AJ and I created all those years ago. Do
any of you use the handpaddle of your GOTO system to create a listing to
what to see? How about a planetarium program?

Anyone using a specific book as a source? Please provide name and author.

Thanks for any input you can provide;
Steve Coe
