Here's a good web page for information about supernovae: http://www.supernovae.net/isn.htm ...and the latest information about SN2009dd in NGC4088, including an image which has the location of the SNe marked. http://www.supernovae.net/supernova.html#2009dd and the discovery image from the Italian CROSS (Cortina Astronomical Assn. remote observatory supernovae search) team, taken on 04-13-09: http://www.cortinastelle.it/cross/SN-NGC4088_20090413.jpg (Note: as usual, you won't observe the tick marks in the sky, haha) SN2009dd is a type II, at approximately magnitude 13.5, and the galaxy is about 10.5. This galaxy also had a previous SNe, SN1991G. The nearby field stars are all approximately magnitude 15 - 17, which can be noted on this deep photometric reference image of NGC408 (also showing SN1991G): http://www.supernovae.net/sn2009/reference/n4088.jpg There are some foreground stars superposed on the image of the galaxy, but the current SNe is evidently close in, next to the core of the galaxy.
