The problem with this is that some deranged  idiot  might get the idea to 
try the same thing only on a more popular road.... you know "monkey see 
monkey do " type of mentality.

Further, non-sensationalistic media outlet research into this appears to 
indicate that the spikes have only been found on trails where ATV / Motor 
traffic is already restricted. No reports have been made concerning normal 
vehicle roads and spike incidents.  Further manual inspection of several 
normally trafficked vehicle roads show no sign of tampering.

In my view, this translates to some hikers who are frustrated by almost 
being run over by ATVs on the non-vehicle trails getting tired of no 
enforcement and took matters into their own hands.  Not smart, but at least 
it doesn’t appear to be general meanness toward all forest travelers.  So, 
if the ATV drivers reporting the incidents had not been where they didn’t 
belong, we might never have heard about this.

But, I read it in USA Today, it must be correct …
