Sometime in the late 1990's, Jim moved to the Verde Valley, which would
explain his absence from the Phoenix scene.  I saw him at one of the AAVV
club meetings a couple years back.

Jim Stevens had a homemade  18" dob with a diagonal that could be shifted
toward the mirror to facilitate a binocular viewer without necessity of a
transfer lens. I still remember a view of Omega Centauri  on the meridian
through that bino rig at Vekol (west side of road).  It appeared as if in
3D and is
one of the most amazing telescopic sights of my life.  Those of there were
gasping.  Jim is one of the nicest guys on the planet and basically
disappeared
from the amateur astronomy scene after that Tony Ortega article.  He
showed
up a couple of years ago at a SAC meeting, but I never saw him again at
any of
the telescope gatherings. Truly sad because in the end, all is transient
and all is
vanity.  When you're out doing visual observing, all that counts is you
and the
universe.

Tom Bopp, co-discoverer of Comet Hale-Bopp, passed away on January 5.  I
have no more details, and don't know if there will be a service in
Phoenix.

In 1996, Tony Ortega wrote this account of the story of Tom's discovery in
