These images compare three pieces of the Veil Nebula taken by 1) a 48-inch
telescope on Palomar Mountain and 2) my 12-inch scope situated in Tempe.
They span 65 years, and show the expansion of the remnant of a supernova,
which went off 10,000 years ago. While it doesn't seem like a few pixels is
a lot of motion, at its distance of 3000 light-years, the velocity across
our line of sight is greater than 500,000 miles per hour.
How things have changed. My image is a sum of four 30-minute exposures with
a CCD camera through a narrowband filter, hence the lack of faint stars. The
Palomar Sky Survey image was a 45-minute exposure taken using 14-inch square
photographic plates, and later digitized.
