If this first spectroscopic follow-up is correct,
then this event is already near maximum brightness:

Although not explicit in their note, the implication
is that the SN is rather obscured by dust in M66
for it to be so faint (fainter than a type I supernova
in any case).
I might mention that having a look at recent
'archival' images per Maddy and Shaheen is a Good Thing
to do. The classic type I supernovae take a couple weeks
to rise to maximum, and picking them up early in the
outburst helps constrain models of the eruptions.
